Evaluating the selection of content in a summary is important both for human-written summaries, which can be a useful pedagogical tool for reading and writing skills, and machinegenerated summaries, which are increasingly being deployed in information management. The pyramid method assesses a summary by aggregating content units from the summaries of a wise crowd (a form of crowdsourcing). It h...

Interest in multiresolution techniques for signal processing and analysis is increasing steadily. An important instance of such a technique is the so-called pyramid decomposition scheme. This report proposes a general axiomatic pyramid decomposition scheme for signal analysis and synthesis. This scheme comprises the following ingredients: (i) the pyramid consists of a ((nite or innnite) number ...

abstract lexical knowledge of complex english words is an important part of language skills and crucial for fluent language use (nation, 2001). the present study, thus, was an attempt to assess the role of morphological decomposition awareness as a vocabulary learning strategy on learners’ productive and receptive recall and recognition of complex english words. so 90 sophomores (female and ma...

Objective: There are several theories proposed on the career development and researchers have classified these theories in different categories. Career-related cognitive theory is one of the latest categories including two theories: social cognitive theory of career development and cognitive information processing. The current study seeks to compare these two cognitive theories of career develo...

The pyramid method for content evaluation of automated summarizers produces scores that are shown to correlate well with manual scores used in educational assessment of students’ summaries. This motivates the development of a more accurate automated method to compute pyramid scores. Of three methods tested here, the one that performs best relies on latent semantics.

In DUC 2005, the pyramid method for content evaluation was used for the first time in a crosssite evaluation. We discuss the method used in creating pyramid models and performing peer annotation. Analysis of score averages for the peers indicates that the best systems score half as well as humans, and that systems can be grouped into better and worse performers. There were few significant diffe...

This is a review paper on the steerable pyramid, a linear multiscale, multiorientation image decomposition that finds use in the preprocessing stage of image processing and computer vision applications. Orthogonal separable wavelet transforms, once popular for the same tasks, give rise to heavily aliased representations that do not represent diagonal orientations well. To overcome these limitat...

Interest in multiresolution techniques for signal processing and analysis is increasing steadily. An important instance of such a technique is the so-called pyramid decomposition scheme. This paper presents a general theory for constructing linear as well as nonlinear pyramid decomposition schemes for signal analysis and synthesis. The proposed theory is based on the following ingredients: 1) t...

Pyramid annotation makes it possible to evaluate quantitatively and qualitatively the content of machine-generated (or human) summaries. Evaluation methods must prove themselves against the same measuring stick – evaluation – as other research methods. First, a formal assessment of pyramid data from the 2003 Document Understanding Conference (DUC) is presented; this addresses whether the form o...
